The gaming universe is buzzing, and while much hype rightfully centers on Creative Assembly’s ferociously ambitious Total War: Warhammer 40,000, don’t you dare sleep on the historical side. CA is also hard at work on Total War: Medieval 3, a long-awaited return to one of the franchise’s most beloved settings. This grand strategy titan is still early in development, but CA is already reaching out to the dedicated gaming community for crucial input.
Creative Assembly has just dropped a new blog post, diving deep into their faction-selection process for Medieval 3 and launching an official survey. They want to know which nations, dynasties, and city-states you dream of leading to glory. This is your chance to help shape the future of a massive historical strategy game.
Creative director Leif Walter outlined three key factors guiding their faction decisions. These include how well known a faction is, the uniqueness of its starting situation, and the distinctive potential mechanics it could offer. It’s all about crafting diverse and engaging gameplay experiences for every player.
Naturally, some titans of the era are already locked in for this historical strategy game. Expect to command these major powers:
Where CA truly seeks your player input is on the smaller, yet equally fascinating, factions of the Middle Ages. Are you itching to forge an empire with Italian city-states like Venice or Milan? Perhaps you yearn to unite the Kingdoms of Scandinavia, or lead powerful Muslim nations such as the Almohad Caliphate or the Fatimid Empire. The possibilities for unique gameplay are immense!
Now, for the critical caveat for this upcoming PC game: Creative Assembly has ruled out some fan-favorite picks. The Russian Principalities and the Mongol Empire are off the table for now. And most notably, sorry Total War fans, but the Papal States are a firm “no.”
Walter explained that while playing as the Pope is a highly desired feature, its unique playstyle would demand too much development focus. CA aims to ensure a broad, balanced experience across all playable factions, rather than dedicating resources to one hyper-specialized option. It’s a tough choice, but understandable for a game still in early development.
Personally, our resident Total War aficionado has their eye on Scotland, imagining brilliant mechanics from the clan system. Dealing with emergent clans and internal squabbles while facing larger threats sounds like a distinct and engaging challenge within the grand strategy framework.
This news from Creative Assembly is incredibly exciting for any grand strategy gaming enthusiast. It’s fantastic to see the developers engaging so early and openly with the community, especially on something as crucial as faction rosters. While saying goodbye to a playable Pope might sting, it points to CA’s commitment to delivering a polished, well-rounded Total War experience.
So, get ready to fill out that survey and champion your favorite historical power! We’re absolutely hyped for both Medieval 3 and the epic Total War: Warhammer 40,000 to grace our gaming rigs in the coming years. The future of strategy gaming looks glorious!
