Hold onto your gems, gamers! A legendary purple dragon is gearing up for an official, fan-made return to PC in a way many thought impossible. We’re talking about the original, beloved PlayStation 1 classic, Spyro the Dragon, getting a native PC port!
While the fantastic Spyro Reignited Trilogy has kept our nostalgia fires burning brightly on Steam, many purists have yearned for the unadulterated PS1 experience on their rigs. Now, thanks to dedicated fans, that dream is becoming a reality much sooner than you might expect for PC gaming enthusiasts.
The groundbreaking gaming news comes straight from Spyro speedrunning sensation, lumilaura. She recently showcased a video on X (and later Reddit), revealing Spyro 1 running flawlessly and natively on Windows 11, having been tapped by the port’s creators for testing.
This isn’t some quick emulation job; it’s a labor of love stemming from an “OpenPETE decomp + recomp hybrid” project by porters Amec/tyscorp. This ambitious fan-made game is building upon the impressive decompilation efforts initiated last year by The Moby Collective.
The Moby Collective’s decompilation project has already hit significant milestones, with 88% of the game’s functions and 58% of its bytes decompiled to source code. This meticulous process is what makes such a high-fidelity, native PC game port viable for the retro gaming community.
And the technical enhancements are nothing short of dazzling. Prepare for Spyro like you’ve never quite seen him before on a modern setup:
In a refreshing twist for the modern gaming landscape, lumilaura also emphatically confirmed that this entire project is being crafted with “no AI.” Yes, tragically, that’s a detail developers feel compelled to highlight these days, and we’re here for this organic development.
While the prospect is thrilling, lumilaura also offers a dose of realism for this fan-made PC port. The project is currently “very unfinished,” presenting with visual artifacting and some awkward camera motions that might induce a bit of motion sickness.
For these reasons, the original Spyro PC port hasn’t been made public just yet. However, the whispers from the speedrunning community suggest a release date is “much sooner than we all think.” Could it even beat the 2027 launch of Toys for Bob’s official Spyro: A Realm Beyond?
This fan-driven Spyro PC port is more than just retro gaming nostalgia; it’s a testament to community passion and technical prowess. While we absolutely adore the Reignited Trilogy, having the original PS1 experience—with modern PC gaming perks and zero AI shenanigans—is a true gem for collectors and speedrunners alike. Just make sure to keep an eye on those camera settings upon release. We’re counting down the days!
