After nearly two decades of shaping the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Nick Fury deserves a respectful final bow in Avengers: Secret Wars to preserve the weight of his legacy.
Since his iconic post-credits debut in 2008’s Iron Man, Nick Fury has been the connective tissue holding the Marvel Cinematic Universe together. Samuel L. Jackson has portrayed the master spy with unmatched charisma, but as the franchise gears up for the massive scale of Avengers: Secret Wars, it is time for the studio to honor the character with a definitive conclusion rather than keeping him indefinitely in the rotation.
Marvel has developed a reputation for struggling with finality. With the multiverse becoming the core engine of the MCU, death and retirement have become increasingly temporary states. While characters like Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Chris Evans’ Captain America received emotional exits in Endgame, the constant return of these actors—either in new roles or through multiverse variants—risks diluting the impact of their original sacrifices.
For Nick Fury, a character defined by his grounded pragmatism, a proper send-off in Secret Wars would achieve several things:
Recent reports confirm that Jackson will not appear in Avengers: Doomsday, but is slated to return for Avengers: Secret Wars. This scheduling suggests that Marvel is saving his presence for the climactic multiversal crossover. Given the scope of Secret Wars as a potential soft reboot or a closing chapter for the current iteration of the MCU, it serves as the most logical place to conclude Fury’s story.
The value of a superhero journey is often found in its conclusion. By allowing Nick Fury to ride into the sunset, Marvel has the chance to show that not every character needs to be a permanent fixture in the machine.
Ultimately, Nick Fury is the man who started it all by approaching Tony Stark about the Avengers Initiative. Letting him see that initiative through to a final, successful conclusion in Secret Wars would be the ultimate tip of the cap to one of the most important figures in comic book cinema history.
