Nexus Mods is adopting a new transparency policy regarding AI-generated content. Find out how these rules impact creators and the future of your favorite game mods.
Nexus Mods, the titan of the modding community, has officially announced a new stance on AI-generated mods. Rather than implementing an outright ban on artificial intelligence, the platform is following Valve’s lead by prioritizing transparency and mandatory disclosure. This shift aims to keep the modding ecosystem open while ensuring players know exactly how these tools influence the content they download.
Starting immediately, anyone uploading new projects to the site must declare whether their work utilizes AI. Nexus owner Victor ‘Foledinho’ Folmann stated that a total ban would only drive AI usage underground, making it harder to track. Instead, the platform is opting for a labeling system that places these disclosures alongside adult-content tags, ensuring they are visible to all users.
Creators must now categorize their work into one of three buckets:
If a mod is marked as ‘AI-assisted’, the author is further required to provide a public explanation detailing exactly where and how AI tools were integrated into the development process.
Beyond labeling, the update addresses the complex issue of intellectual property. Nexus Mods has made a firm commitment to the community by pledging never to use hosted mods to train AI models or sell data to third-party developers for similar purposes.
The platform is also introducing a new permission system for mod authors. This allows creators to explicitly state whether they permit their work to be used for external AI training. To ensure maximum control for the community, the default setting for all mods will be ‘Ask Me’, preventing unauthorized scraping.
If you are a creator on the platform, there is no need to panic, but there is a clear timeline for compliance. Nexus Mods has initiated a 60-day grace period, starting from November 3, 2026, and concluding on January 2, 2027.
This transition window is designed to give authors sufficient time to review their existing portfolios, tag their content correctly, and familiarize themselves with the new permission settings.
By bringing AI out of the shadows, Nexus Mods is attempting to balance technological innovation with the creative integrity that has defined the site for years. For the average gamer, this means more clarity when browsing for your next playthrough, ensuring you know exactly what is ‘under the hood’ of your favorite community-made additions.
