Critical Role is teaming up with Hololive for a unique TTRPG experience called Shattered Legends, bringing together voice actors and digital performers in a dark, Soulsborne-inspired adventure.
In an unexpected crossover that has captured the attention of both TTRPG fans and the VTuber community, Critical Role and Hololive have officially joined forces for Shattered Legends. This new series blends the high-stakes storytelling of D&D-style gameplay with the digital artistry of VTubing, proving that the medium of voice acting knows no boundaries.
The project originated from a pitch by Hololive’s Nerissa Ravencroft, a long-time fan of Critical Role who dreamt of running a campaign. What started as a personal desire evolved into a full-scale production featuring Ravencroft, Mori Calliope, Gigi Murin, and Shiori Novella. The group opted for a grim, Berserk and Soulsborne-inspired aesthetic, creating a darker atmosphere than many might expect from a typical collab.
Matt Mercer, the lead narrator and face of Critical Role, noted that working on Shattered Legends gave him a newfound respect for the performers. He emphasized that at their core, VTubers are dedicated voice actors who bring immense skill and talent to their avatars. While the production faced unique technical hurdles—specifically merging real-life human performers with 2D digital models—the result is a seamless integration that pushes the boundaries of modern entertainment.
The collaboration is not just a showcase of characters; it is a mechanical deep dive into Daggerheart, Critical Role’s bespoke fantasy tabletop system. Here is what fans can look forward to:
By blending the improvisation of professional voice acting with the cutting-edge digital presence of Hololive, Shattered Legends stands as a milestone for cross-platform collaboration. Whether you are a diehard Critter or a loyal fan of the Hololive roster, this series promises a compelling look at how TTRPGs can evolve in the digital age.
