Ever wondered why Idris Elba didn't step into the boots of Deadshot or Deathstroke in The Suicide Squad? Director James Gunn finally sets the record straight.
When Idris Elba joined the cast of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, fans were buzzing with theories about which DC heavy hitter he would portray. It turns out, Elba’s journey to becoming Bloodsport was a complex game of musical chairs driven by fan sentiment and professional courtesy. In a recent appearance on the DC Studios Showcase podcast, Gunn finally cleared the air on why Elba didn’t land the roles of Deadshot or Deathstroke.
The initial plan was quite straightforward: the studio wanted Elba to replace Will Smith as Deadshot. However, the online reaction from Smith’s fanbase was overwhelmingly negative. Out of a sense of respect for the character’s established history and the actor who defined him, Elba ultimately declined the role.
Gunn then pivoted toward the idea of casting Elba as Deathstroke, a character he believes the actor would have played brilliantly. This path, however, hit a wall due to continuity issues:
These professional pivots led directly to the creation of Bloodsport, a character that many fans now consider one of the strongest additions to the modern DC cinematic landscape.
With The Suicide Squad now officially recognized as the first canon film in the new DCU, questions regarding the return of its stars are mounting. James Gunn has made his stance clear: he is a massive fan of both the character of Bloodsport and the actor behind the mask.
Gunn noted,
I like Bloodsport so much. I’d like to see the character return. I also like working with Idris. Idris is a good guy, so I would like to see him return as Bloodsport or even somebody else.
This suggests that Elba is firmly part of the long-term plans for the franchise. Furthermore, the fluidity of the new DCU is evident; Gunn confirmed that other cast members, such as Jai Courtney, are expected to return to the fold, potentially in entirely new roles. For fans, this means the door is wide open for more surprises as the DCU continues to expand.
