Path of Exile 2: The Shadow Class Brings Stealth and Ambush Tactics to the December Launch

Grinding Gear Games has officially revealed the return of the Shadow class in Path of Exile 2, bringing new stealth mechanics and trap-based combat to the December 11 release.

Path of Exile 2 Shadow Class Brings New Stealth Dynamics

The highly anticipated 1.0 release of Path of Exile 2 is set for December 11, and Grinding Gear Games just sweetened the deal by confirming the arrival of the Path of Exile 2 Shadow class. Known for his lethal precision and affinity for traps, the Shadow returns with a complete mechanical overhaul that emphasizes stealth and calculated, high-impact gameplay.

This addition, arriving alongside the previously announced Duelist, expands the game’s tactical depth. Whether you are a veteran of the original game or a newcomer looking for a high-skill ceiling, the Shadow offers a refreshing take on the classic assassin archetype.

Mastering Stealth and Trap Mechanics

The most significant change for the Shadow is the introduction of dedicated stealth mechanics. This new feature allows players to bypass enemy detection until they are within striking range. Because the stealth cooldown resets upon securing a kill, the gameplay loop encourages aggressive, fluid movement through arenas.

The integration between stealth and trap deployment is particularly innovative. In the original Path of Exile, traps were largely reactive. In the sequel, the interaction is deliberate: traps thrown from stealth remain dormant until you break cover, allowing for true, strategic ambushes. Key highlights of the new system include:

  • Stealth Cooldown Reset: Eliminating enemies allows for continuous mobility while remaining hidden.
  • Strategic Traps: Eight distinct trap types are available at 1.0 launch, each designed to interact with one another for complex build crafting.
  • Shade Decoys: Activating stealth leaves behind a shade that blinds nearby enemies, providing a defensive layer for players caught in the open.

Ascendancy Options and Build Diversity

With the launch of 1.0, the Shadow will arrive with two distinct ascendancy paths: the returning Assassin and the brand new Infiltrator. While Grinding Gear Games has indicated that each class will eventually feature at least three ascendancy options, these initial choices promise to cater to both direct combat enthusiasts and trap-focused specialists.

The inclusion of the dagger as a dedicated weapon type—supported by an array of new skill gems—will further push the limits of build diversity. By combining stealth-based movement with updated trap interactions and the precision of dagger-based combat, the Shadow looks to be one of the most mechanically demanding and rewarding classes in Path of Exile 2. Expect a surge in creative build archetypes when the game drops this December.
