Dishonored co-creator Harvey Smith has teamed up with industry veterans to launch Black Pony Immersive, a new studio dedicated to crafting legendary first-person immersive sims.
If your heart skipped a beat at the mention of emergent gameplay, deeply realized worlds, and player freedom, dust off your blackjack because the architects of modern gaming are getting back to work. Harvey Smith, the legendary co-creator of Dishonored and principal mind behind milestones like Deus Ex and Thief: Deadly Shadows, has officially pulled back the curtain on his brand-new venture: Black Pony Immersive. Partnering with executive producer Ben Horne and bringing along a murderer’s row of industry talent from Arkane, Insomniac, Epic, and Volition—including longtime collaborator Ricardo Bare—Smith is diving right back into the genre that has defined his illustrious career.
Of course, anyone reading the studio’s official mandate—describing a team built to design imaginative first-person action RPGs with deep environmental storytelling and reactive mechanics—might chuckle at the deliberate phrasing. It is a lot of corporate syllables just to avoid using the dreaded ‘I-word’ in a volatile market. Immersive sims have historically been a tough sell for mainstream publishing executives, often requiring massive budgets, immense development time, and trusting the player enough to let them break the game in delightful, unintended ways. Yet, looking closely at Black Pony’s manifesto, which cheekily nods to legendary forebear Looking Glass Studios with the phrase “Through the looking glass, we’re chasing a dream of mystery, meaning, and creative play,” it is clear that Smith and his crew are not backing down from their roots. They are doubling down on single-player artistry.
In an era dominated by live-service roadmaps and predictable open-world checklists, the promise of a tightly crafted, systems-driven single-player experience feels like discovering an oasis in a digital wasteland. Smith has always championed games that treat the player’s intelligence with respect, rewarding sheer curiosity and lateral thinking over rote button-mashing. Whether you want to sneak through the shadows like a ghost, manipulate the environment to bypass obstacles, or cause absolute chronological chaos, Black Pony Immersive is shaping up to be the sanctuary that immersive sim enthusiasts have desperately been praying for. While we wait for their debut title to materialize, one thing is certain: the spirit of Looking Glass Studios lives on, and the shadows just got a whole lot more interesting.
