CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed that the upcoming live-action project will avoid a direct game adaptation, choosing to explore new stories within the Cyberpunk universe.
If you were expecting to see V’s journey from the console screen to the cinema, think again. CD Projekt Red has officially clarified that the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 movie will not be a direct film adaptation of the game’s narrative. Instead, the studio is opting to craft an entirely new story set within the gritty, neon-soaked world of Night City.
In a recent update, CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski revealed that the studio has shifted its strategy. After parting ways with Anonymous Content, the company has entered into a new collaboration with Paramount Pictures. This partnership signals a departure from previous plans, favoring a fresh narrative approach over a one-to-one translation of the source material.
By stepping away from the game’s core storyline, CD Projekt Red is avoiding the common pitfalls of game-to-screen adaptations. Trying to compress a complex, player-driven RPG into a two-hour film often leads to lackluster results. By focusing on the world rather than the specific gameplay narrative, the studio gains the creative freedom to expand the lore without being tethered to V’s established path.
History has shown that the most successful adaptations are those that treat the game as a setting rather than a script. Projects like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners succeeded precisely because they carved out their own space while respecting the existing framework of Mike Pondsmith’s tabletop universe.
While we may not see a direct retelling of the game, this shift is largely considered a win for the community. The Cyberpunk universe is vast, and a live-action project offers the chance to showcase the visual splendor and dark atmosphere of the setting through a different lens. Whether we see cameos from iconic characters or entirely new faces, the Cyberpunk 2077 movie is shaping up to be an original expansion of the franchise that fans already know and love.
The goal is not to replicate the game’s story, but to tell a story that feels authentic to the world of Cyberpunk.
We are still in the early stages of this new partnership with Paramount, but the shift in philosophy is clear: the future of the franchise on screen is about building out the world, not just echoing what has already been played.
