Following the closure of BioWare, CD Projekt leadership has shared how the legendary studio served as a foundational partner during the early development of The Witcher.
The gaming industry is reeling from the news of BioWare’s closure, prompting a wave of tributes from fans and developers alike. Among the most poignant reflections comes from CD Projekt joint CEO Michał Nowakowski, who highlighted that the BioWare legacy is deeply intertwined with the early success of The Witcher. Long before CD Projekt became an industry giant, the studio relied on BioWare’s expertise to navigate the competitive RPG landscape.
The relationship between the two powerhouses began in the late 90s when CD Projekt secured the rights to localize Baldur’s Gate for Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. This partnership was a springboard for CD Projekt’s growth. According to Nowakowski, the connection went far beyond simple distribution:
BioWare effectively resurrected the computer RPG genre in the 90s, setting a standard with titles like Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, and Mass Effect. The influence of these games is etched into the design philosophies of modern titles everywhere.
Bioware has been a massive part of CDPR history. We befriended them when localizing and selling Baldur’s Gate games. And later they were great help when lending us their engine for Witcher 1, sharing their wisdom and even giving us a spot at their booth at E3. – Michał Nowakowski
While the closure marks a sad chapter for the industry, the contributions made by the developers at BioWare continue to live on through the games they inspired. Their willingness to support a smaller, emerging studio at the time helped pave the way for the massive open-world experiences players enjoy today.
