Bass x Machina: Brian Tyree Henry Leads a Genre-Bending Steampunk Western Anime

Actor and self-proclaimed geek Brian Tyree Henry is set to make his mark on the animation world with Bass x Machina, an ambitious new series that promises to shake up the genre landscape. Arriving on Netflix on November 3, the project is described by Henry as a wild blend of Spaghetti Western flair, steampunk aesthetics, and punk rock energy. As a high-profile executive producer and star, Henry is pushing for a narrative that finally puts diverse representation at the forefront of the medium.

What to Expect from Bass x Machina

Produced by the acclaimed Studio Mir, the series takes a bold approach to storytelling by reimagining the life of Bass Reeves, the historical first Black deputy U.S. Marshal. While the premise is grounded in history, the execution is pure genre-bending spectacle. Fans can expect a high-stakes adventure where historical significance meets futuristic imagination.

• Genre Fusion: A unique cocktail of Spaghetti Western tropes and steampunk technology.
• Creative DNA: The series draws spiritual inspiration from iconic space Western classics like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Outlaw Star.
• Production Quality: Backed by the visual storytelling expertise of Studio Mir, known for high-octane animation.

Brian Tyree Henry and the Fight for Representation

For Brian Tyree Henry, Bass x Machina is more than just a creative endeavor; it is a personal mission. In recent interviews, Henry highlighted the lack of visibility for Black fans and creators in mainstream anime and fandom spaces. By spearheading this project, he aims to ensure that marginalized audiences see themselves reflected in the heart of the narrative.

I’m hoping that fans, episode to episode, can root for somebody that looks like them.

The series explores themes of exclusion and survival, focusing on characters trying to navigate a world that has consistently denied them their place. This isn’t just an experimental project; it is a deliberate effort to reshape the anime narrative, ensuring that the “nerd street cred” Henry loves is inclusive of everyone who shares his passion for the genre.

Why the Genre-Bending Approach Matters

The decision to mix genres is what truly sets this series apart. By refusing to stay within the boundaries of a traditional historical drama or a standard steampunk adventure, the show creates a space for constant surprise. The practical impact of this stylistic choice is a series that feels fresh, unpredictable, and entirely modern.

As we approach the November 3 release, it is clear that Bass x Machina is aiming to be a landmark title for Netflix. Whether you are a fan of the classic space Westerns or just looking for a new, visually striking adventure, this show is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated entries in the current animation calendar.
