After nearly a decade of waiting, the legendary chain weapon from the Witcher lore is finally coming to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in the new expansion, Songs of the Past.
Geralt of Rivia is finally getting his hands on the weapon fans have been waiting for since 2007. With the upcoming release of the Songs of the Past expansion for The Witcher 3, developers are introducing a lethal silver chain that finally allows players to wield the iconic tool featured in the original novels and the series’ debut cinematic.
While this weapon seems like a perfect fit for a mutant monster hunter, it has been a long time coming. According to Game Director Jakob Rokosz, the team at CD Projekt Red actually discussed adding the The Witcher 3 chain weapon during the game’s initial development phase over a decade ago. Unfortunately, the idea was shelved because the game’s original engine simply could not handle the complex physics and animations required to make a flexible chain feel realistic.
It was only during the recent remastering efforts for the game that the development team finally solved these technical bottlenecks. By refining the physics engine, they were able to create an experience that feels fluid and responsive, effectively bridging the gap between Andrzej Sapkowski’s written descriptions and the gameplay experience.
This isn’t just a cosmetic addition for fans of the lore; the chain serves a distinct purpose in the expansion’s combat encounters. Senior quest designer Despoina Anetaki confirmed that the weapon is built specifically to address new tactical challenges introduced in Songs of the Past.
The integration of the chain impacts combat in several meaningful ways:
By forcing players to manage space against encroaching swarms, the developers have successfully turned an old design challenge into a fresh, satisfying gameplay mechanic that breathes new life into the aging, yet beloved, title.
