Welcome back, fellow digital explorers, to your weekly download from The Nerd Bureau! Steam’s digital shelves are currently overflowing with a subgenre that’s equal parts unsettling and utterly captivating: liminal spaces games. We’re talking about those eerily familiar yet utterly desolate landscapes that evoke a profound sense of nostalgic dread.
This week, our eyes are fixed on Dreamcore, a first-person exploration game that truly nails the liminal vibe. It plunges you into a collection of unsettling environments, from labyrinthine indoor pools that hum with forgotten echoes to endless stretches of low-poly suburbia. You’ll even find a disquieting take on the “liminal hotel,” echoing the internet-famous Backrooms meme.
Liminal spaces, by definition, are thresholds – places built for passage, not for lingering. Yet, in games like Dreamcore, we’re invited to linger in their bleak, empty expanses, spaces usually bustling but now eerily vacant. It’s a unique flavor of horror that taps into a collective unconscious, a melancholy folk art for the 21st century.
Dreamcore, which launched in January 2025, continues to evolve, adding a brand-new map last week: Dead Mall. This sprawling shopping center, straight out of a 1990s exurban dream (or nightmare), perfectly captures a growing nostalgia for those once-maligned retail behemoths. It’s a monument to a pre-eCommerce era, now rendered eerily obsolete.
While the gaming market might be saturated with similar titles – think Pools, Tainted Pools, or Liminal Shift – Dreamcore stands out as an excellent entry point into this despondent genre. Its diverse themes run smoothly, offering light puzzles or simply the chance to wander and capture haunting screenshots. It’s a testament to the wild, non-commercial obsessions that thrive in PC gaming.
Shifting gears from the desolate to the dominant, let’s peek at Steam’s top sellers by revenue from May 12-19. The leaderboard offers a mix of established titans and exciting newcomers, painting a clear picture of what’s currently captivating gamers worldwide.
The highly anticipated Subnautica 2 snagged the top spot, demonstrating immense player excitement for deep-sea survival. Interestingly, Forza Horizon 6, despite its launch week, settled at number two. This isn’t a knock on the racing giant; Subnautica 2 simply had less pre-order runway, creating a concentrated surge of day-one purchases and even boosting sales of its predecessors.
Other mainstays like Counter-Strike 2, PUBG: Battlegrounds, and Apex Legends continue their reign, proving the enduring power of competitive multiplayer gaming. Marvel Rivals and Diablo 4 also made strong showings, alongside Overwatch. And keep an eye on LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Night; released late in the week, it’s already a global bestseller in real-time and poised to climb higher.
We also spotted an intriguing anomaly: Librarian: Tidy Up The Arcane Library. This relatively obscure April release suddenly surged into the real-time global top ten, thanks to a viral video from content creator Skoottie. It’s a powerful reminder of how community influence can instantly elevate a hidden gem in the vast world of Steam.
Beyond the charts, the indie scene continues to churn out unique experiences. Our weekly “Deep Cuts” spotlight brings you some hidden treasures you might have missed:
And finally, for a laugh, our favorite Steam user review of the week, courtesy of Houbs! on Bubsy 4D: “My man Bubby goes naked in the first minute of the game, 11/10.” Classic. We love to see it.
The Nerd Bureau Take: This week on Steam truly showcased the platform’s duality: the massive appeal of AAA blockbusters standing alongside a thriving ecosystem of idiosyncratic indie creations. From the melancholic allure of liminal spaces in Dreamcore to the unexpected viral rise of Librarian, PC gaming remains a vibrant, ever-evolving landscape where anything can capture our collective imagination. Keep exploring, Nerds!
