Steam Frame VR Headset Surges in Popularity Despite Supply Hurdles

Valve's new Steam Frame headset has surged in the latest Steam Hardware Survey, jumping to the sixth most popular VR device despite ongoing shipping delays.

The virtual reality landscape on PC is shifting, and Steam Frame is leading the charge. According to the latest Steam Hardware Survey, Valve’s newest premium VR headset has made a massive jump in adoption, climbing to become the sixth most popular headset among Steam users in just its first full month of availability.

The Explosive Rise of the Steam Frame

Entering the market in late September, the Steam Frame saw its usage share skyrocket from a modest 0.41% in September to a commanding 4.13% in October. This 3.72% increase marks the largest growth spurt for any headset in the survey, effectively pushing the device past industry staples like the Oculus Rift S, Sony PS VR2, and the HTC Vive.

This growth is particularly impressive when you consider the current supply chain reality:

  • Backorder status: Both the 256 GB and 1 TB models are currently on backorder, meaning new buyers are often placed on a waiting list rather than receiving immediate delivery.
  • Market positioning: The headset is closing in on the Pico 4, trailing by only 0.37%, while still having a significant gap to bridge before challenging the current market leader, the Meta Quest 3.
  • Steady momentum: As shipping times stabilize and more pre-ordered units reach customers, analysts expect this upward trend to continue through the end of the year.

What This Means for the VR Market

While the Steam Frame has undeniably disrupted the rankings, the data also highlights the current state of the PC VR ecosystem. The decline of the Oculus Quest 2, which lost 3.57% of its share in the same period, suggests a migration toward newer hardware among dedicated enthusiasts.

The rapid adoption of the Steam Frame, despite it being a premium, high-cost device, signals that there is a robust appetite for high-fidelity VR experiences among the dedicated Steam user base.

However, industry experts advise taking these statistics with a pinch of salt. The relatively small percentage shifts required to move up the leaderboard suggest that the overall PC VR market size remains modest compared to the broader gaming industry. Nevertheless, the Steam Frame has clearly cemented its status as a significant player in the high-end VR space, proving that gamers are willing to wait for top-tier performance.
