Liquid Swords, the developer behind the crime-sim Samson, has officially filed for bankruptcy just months after the game's release, leaving the future of the studio uncertain.
In a sobering turn of events for the gaming industry, Swedish developer Liquid Swords has officially filed for Liquid Swords bankruptcy. This collapse comes just six months after the release of their debut title, Samson, and follows reports from employees who claimed they had been working without pay for the past two months.
Founded in 2020 by Christofer Sundberg—a veteran industry figure known for co-founding Avalanche Studios—Liquid Swords had high ambitions for Samson. What was originally envisioned as a large-scale action RPG hit multiple roadblocks, including a series of publisher rejections. By last year, the studio was forced to pivot, laying off half its workforce and drastically restructuring the game into the run-based crime simulator that was eventually released in April.
Despite the studio’s efforts to iterate on the project, Samson struggled to find its footing. The game faced several hurdles upon launch, including:
These mounting financial pressures ultimately led the studio’s 30 employees to petition for bankruptcy, marking a sad conclusion for the independent developer.
With the bankruptcy order officially issued on October 12, the focus has shifted to the aftermath. The studio’s administrator, Cirio Law, has placed Liquid Swords and all its assets—including the rights to Samson—up for sale. A bidding window has been opened for interested parties, lasting until October 21.
The bankruptcy process serves as a grim reminder of the volatility inherent in game development, where even seasoned veterans can find themselves unable to bridge the gap between creative vision and financial sustainability.
While the fate of the employees and the Samson intellectual property remains in limbo, the industry will undoubtedly be watching to see if any buyer steps in to salvage the studio’s remaining work.
