Universal Pictures is reportedly in talks with J.A. Bayona to helm the next installment of the Jurassic World franchise. The filmmaker previously directed 2018's Fallen Kingdom.
The search for a Jurassic World 5 director has taken an unexpected turn back toward franchise history. Following the departure of Gareth Edwards due to creative differences, Universal Pictures is reportedly eyeing J.A. Bayona to step back into the director’s chair. Bayona, who previously helmed 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, has emerged as the studio’s top candidate to lead the upcoming sequel.
Industry insiders, including reporter Jeff Sneider and The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit, have confirmed that the studio is prioritizing a reunion with Bayona. This development comes after the studio briefly considered Twisters director Lee Isaac Chung for the role. By choosing a filmmaker who has already navigated the complexities of this dinosaur-filled universe, Universal seems to be prioritizing continuity and experience to keep the high-stakes project on track.
The project remains in active development with a script already penned by franchise veteran David Koepp.
Despite the change in leadership, the foundation of the next film remains rock solid. Fans can expect significant talent to return to the screen, as the production is currently moving forward with key cast members from Jurassic World: Rebirth:
Additionally, the project maintains its authoritative backing, with Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall remaining attached as producers. This ensures that even with a potential change in the director’s chair, the core creative vision for the future of the series remains consistent.
J.A. Bayona’s potential return brings both excitement and questions regarding the film’s tone. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was a massive commercial success, grossing over $1.3 billion globally. Critics often noted Bayona’s distinct, darker visual style as a standout element of that production. As the franchise looks toward its next chapter, the return of a director known for injecting a specific aesthetic into the series could mark a significant tonal shift for the upcoming sequel. The studio is clearly banking on his ability to manage large-scale blockbusters, hoping his second outing will provide the narrative momentum needed for the next phase of the saga.
