Lucasfilm is returning to its roots, tapping Spider-Man director Jon Watts to helm the next installment of the iconic Skywalker Saga.
Lucasfilm is officially looking to the future by reaching into its past, as reports confirm that Spider-Man director Jon Watts has been tapped to lead the next chapter of the legendary Skywalker Saga. After an eight-year hiatus from the core family narrative, the Star Wars universe is preparing to expand once again with a brand-new trilogy.
The project pairs Watts with writer Simon Kinberg, a figure already deeply entrenched in the Lucasfilm ecosystem. Kinberg, known for his work on X-Men: Dark Phoenix and the animated hit Star Wars Rebels, has reportedly been developing this narrative path since 2018. The collaboration brings together two creators with significant experience in massive, interconnected cinematic universes.
The return to the Skywalker Saga marks a massive shift for Lucasfilm. Since the conclusion of the sequel trilogy in 2019, the franchise has focused heavily on streaming projects and standalone narratives. Bringing the Skywalker lineage back to the forefront signals a desire to recapture the scale of the original and prequel trilogies.
The project is still in early stages and is currently awaiting a final greenlight from Disney, according to reports.
One of the most exciting rumors circulating is the potential return of Daisy Ridley as Rey. Given that the sequel trilogy concluded with the rise of a new generation of Force users, her involvement would provide a critical bridge between the previous films and the new direction Watts and Kinberg are crafting. While Lucasfilm has yet to provide an official comment, the prospect of seeing the Jedi Order’s future through a familiar lens has certainly piqued fan interest.
