How to Unlock Transmog in The Witcher 3 Remastered: A Complete Guide

Customizing Geralt's appearance is easier than ever in the updated version of The Witcher 3. Learn how to unlock transmog for your armor and swords with our expert guide.

If you have been dying to change Geralt’s look without sacrificing those crucial stats, you are in luck. One of the most requested quality-of-life additions in the updated version of the game is the ability to transmog in The Witcher 3 Remastered. This feature allows you to swap the visual appearance of your gear while keeping the powerful bonuses of your equipped armor and weapons intact.

How to Unlock Transmog NPCs

You cannot simply change your appearance at any random blacksmith in Velen. The feature is restricted to the two master smiths in the game, who require you to prove your worth by completing their respective side quests first:

  • Yoana (Armor): Located at Crow’s Perch. You must complete the Master Armorers quest, which involves retrieving blacksmith tools from Undvik.
  • Hattori (Swords): Located in Novigrad, northwest of Glory Gate. You must complete the Of Swords and Dumplings quest to unlock his services.

Once these quests are finished, you can access the transmog menu by selecting the reforge tab in the top right corner of their shop interface.

How the Transmog System Works

Understanding the mechanics behind this system is key to building your perfect aesthetic. Here is how it functions in practice:

  • Unlocking Skins: Any piece of armor or sword you pick up and place in Geralt’s inventory automatically unlocks as a skin for transmog purposes.
  • Cost: Swapping appearances is not free; expect to pay between 100 to 200 gold coins per item for each change.
  • Dye Compatibility: Transmog armor will retain the color of the base armor piece, so keep your dyes in mind if you are going for a specific look.

Note: Currently, the system is not retroactive for endgame saves. You will need to take gear out of your stash or re-acquire it to register the items in your inventory and unlock the skins.

Tips for Finding Your Best Gear

Since you need to have items pass through your inventory to unlock their skins, now is the perfect time to hunt for iconic Witcher school gear sets. Whether you prefer the sign-focused Griffin set or the heavy protection of the Ursine armor, collecting these sets will grant you a massive wardrobe for your future transmog sessions. Keep an eye out for these sets during your playthrough to ensure your Geralt always looks as lethal as he performs.
