HeroQuest: Digital Edition Brings Classic Dungeon Crawling to Steam in 2027

The legendary dungeon crawler HeroQuest is receiving a fully featured digital adaptation on Steam, complete with online multiplayer and a community-driven quest editor.

Avalon Hill’s iconic dungeon crawler is finally making the leap to PC, as HeroQuest: Digital Edition has been officially announced for a 2027 release on Steam. Developed by Nomad Games—the studio behind digital adaptations of Talisman and Fury of Dracula—this new version aims to bring the classic tabletop experience to a digital audience with modern conveniences and deep community integration.

The Core Features of HeroQuest: Digital Edition

Players can look forward to the quintessential HeroQuest experience, focusing on trap-disarming, spell-casting, and goblin-bashing. The digital version is based on the American edition of the game, meaning players will face off against the villainous Zargon. The software is designed to handle the heavy lifting, allowing for flexible gameplay modes:

  • Solo Play: The computer takes control of the Evil Wizard and his minions, allowing you to quest alone.
  • Online Multiplayer: Support for up to four heroes to tackle dungeons together.
  • Asymmetric Play: A fifth player has the option to step into the role of Zargon to challenge the party.

Customization Through the Quest Editor

The most exciting prospect for fans is the inclusion of an integrated quest editor. This feature will allow players to craft their own bespoke maps and missions, fundamentally extending the game’s lifespan well beyond the base content. Through integration with mod.io, players will be able to share their creations and download new adventures crafted by the community, ensuring that the dungeon-crawling never truly ends.

What This Means for Veteran Players

For those familiar with the original board game, the transition to digital offers a chance to refine the experience. There is high anticipation regarding whether the developers will implement quality-of-life adjustments seen in recent releases like HeroQuest: First Light. Specifically, movement rules that bypass the tedious 2d6 rolls when no enemies are present would be a welcome change for pacing.

The move to digital with mod.io support suggests that HeroQuest: Digital Edition could become a cornerstone of the tabletop-to-PC genre, providing a sandbox for fans to create and share for years to come.

While the full launch is slated for 2027, Nomad Games has confirmed that a closed beta playtest is coming soon. This will be the first major opportunity for players to test the digital mechanics and see if the classic, turn-based magic of HeroQuest holds up in a fully animated PC environment.
