New reports from insiders suggest that Halo Studios was years away from releasing its next major project before Microsoft's massive restructuring. We dive into what this means for the franchise.
If you were holding your breath for the next major entry in the Master Chief saga, recent reports suggest you will need to wait quite a bit longer. The landscape of Halo Studios has shifted dramatically, with Microsoft moving to strip the developer down to a skeleton crew and transitioning the franchise’s future into the hands of Activision. Insiders report that the next mainline Halo game was, at minimum, years away from release.
The recent layoffs caught many within Halo Studios off guard, with reports indicating that some employees learned of their fate through public company blogs before receiving direct notification. According to industry insiders like Tom Warren and Rebs Gaming, the internal environment was characterized by a lack of momentum. Before the plug was pulled, the team was juggling several ambitious, albeit early-stage, projects:
None of these titles had reached full production status, painting a picture of a studio that was scattered and perhaps overly focused on the franchise’s past rather than its immediate future.
With Halo Studios now reduced to approximately 30 employees focused on maintaining existing titles like Halo Infinite and Campaign Evolved, the baton has effectively been passed. Activision is currently establishing a new studio dedicated specifically to the future of the Master Chief. While this transition brings uncertainty, it also signals a departure from the slow-moving development cycle that has plagued the series for years.
For all its initial live-service fumbles, Halo Infinite eventually evolved into one of the best iterations of the franchise since the Bungie era.
The tragedy here is not just the loss of personnel, but the interruption of a team that finally seemed to find its footing. While the prospect of another remake might have been divisive, the industry-wide consensus remains clear: the franchise needs a fresh, unified direction. Whether Activision can capture the magic of the series’ peak or if this is the start of a new, experimental era remains the biggest question in gaming today.
