Hey there, Vault Dwellers and Wasteland wanderers! Prepare to have your minds blown with a truly epic dive into Fallout’s primordial past. Our resident lore master, Fallout creator Tim Cain, has unearthed a forgotten treasure that rewrites a significant chapter in gaming history, revealing the absolutely wild character builds we almost had.
Before the iconic SPECIAL system defined every perk, stat, and personality trait in Fallout, the game’s very core was built on an entirely different foundation. From 1994 to early 1997, the Generic Universal Roleplaying System, or GURPS (which, let’s be honest, sounds more like a tummy ache than a TTRPG), was the engine driving the wasteland.
This licensed tabletop system was at the heart of Black Isle’s vision. However, the legendary violence that would become a Fallout hallmark eventually led to a falling out with GURPS creator Steve Jackson. SPECIAL swiftly stepped in, and the rest, as they say, is history – or so we thought.
For nearly three decades, the specifics of this “GURPS Fallout” era were believed lost to the ages. Tim Cain himself thought all his notes had been destroyed or misplaced. Yet, in a stroke of incredible luck and diligent archiving (from his own “destroyed” stash!), Cain rediscovered the long-lost GURPS attribute lists and shared them on his YouTube channel.
So, what exactly did this alternate Fallout universe look like? The GURPS system was both simpler and vastly more complex than SPECIAL. It featured only four core stats: Strength, Health, IQ, and Dexterity. But these were layered with a voluminous catalog of Advantages, Disadvantages, and Quirks that offered unparalleled character depth.
The Quirks were the real showstoppers. Tim Cain revealed some truly outlandish options that would have made for unforgettable playthroughs. Picture a character who “snores loudly,” “believes in UFOs,” or my personal favorite, “hates cows.” Yes, you could literally funnel all your negative energy into despising the most innocuous animal in the wasteland.
The Nerd Bureau Take: While the thought of a snoring, UFO-believing cow hater exploring the wastes is pure comedic gold, the GURPS system sounds incredibly intricate. We’re ultimately glad SPECIAL won out for its elegant balance of depth and accessibility, making Fallout the iconic RPG it is today. Still, this peek into a lost past is an absolute treat for any dedicated fan!
Amplo Insights: This discovery by Tim Cain isn’t just a historical footnote; it’s a vibrant testament to the chaotic, creative process behind legendary game development. It highlights the countless decisions and paths not taken, offering a tantalizing glimpse into a “what if” scenario that enriches our appreciation for Fallout’s incredible evolution.
