Less than three months after restructuring, Double Fine Productions is back with a bold new experimental game, Thank You Bus Driver, launching on October 14.
Less than three months after their departure from the Xbox ecosystem, the legendary developers at Double Fine Productions are proving they aren’t slowing down. The studio has officially announced Thank You Bus Driver, an experimental new title that perfectly captures the studio’s signature off-beat humor and chaotic gameplay style. Scheduled for release on October 14, this driving simulator is the first title to arrive in the post-Xbox era of the studio.
If you were expecting a traditional bus simulator, you might want to adjust your expectations. Double Fine describes Thank You Bus Driver as a frantic cross between the arcade classic Crazy Taxi and the bureaucratic tension of Papers, Please! The core gameplay loop focuses on three critical objectives that every player must balance while behind the wheel:
The game tasks you with driving your route, picking up passengers, and maintaining order. If a passenger gets out of line, the game’s unique mechanics allow you to deliver a well-timed slap or even toss them out of the back of the bus to keep your schedule intact.
This release marks the debut of Double Fine Action Labs, a new publishing label introduced by CEO Tim Schafer. The label is designed to house experimental, smaller-scale projects that originate from the studio’s internal game jams, like the famous Amnesia Fortnight events. According to Schafer, the goal is to set clear expectations for players: these are not massive, budget-heavy titles like Psychonauts 3, but rather "rough and scrappy" experiences.
These are complete games. They are not incomplete. But they are rough and scrappy and small. They are meant to be cheap and played for shorter amounts of time.
By compartmentalizing these experimental projects, Double Fine can continue to innovate without the immense pressure of AAA development cycles. For fans of the studio, this is a promising sign that despite recent corporate shifts, the creative heart of the team remains firmly intact and ready to deliver the unexpected.
