Control Resonant: New Details on Bosses and Gameplay Mechanics

Remedy Entertainment breaks down the gameplay innovations and haunting boss encounters in Control Resonant, the highly anticipated sequel to their 2019 hit.

If you have been waiting for the next chapter of Remedy Entertainment’s supernatural universe, the latest deep dive into Control Resonant provides a clear look at what players can expect. Set in a reality-bending version of Manhattan, this ARPG sequel shifts the spotlight to Dylan Faden as he navigates the chaos caused by the Hiss and a mysterious new threat known as the Patterning.

Understanding the Patterning and the Control Resonant Experience

The core conflict of the game centers on the Patterning, an otherworldly influence that distorts reality, light, and time itself. According to creative director Mikael Kasurinen, the Patterning is not merely a visual aesthetic but a transformative force that mutates citizens into monstrous entities. To survive this unstable environment, players must master Dylan’s ability to manipulate gravity, allowing for movement across walls and ceilings to traverse a city that no longer obeys the laws of physics.

Artistic Inspiration and The Resonant Bosses

Rather than looking at contemporary titles for gameplay cues, the development team drew inspiration from surrealist art and cinema, specifically the works of M.C. Escher and films like Paprika and A Field in England. This unique approach is best reflected in the Control Resonant bosses, known as the Resonants. These entities are individuals twisted by the environment, and they represent more than just standard encounters:

  • Unique Combat Opportunities: Players can defeat these bosses to absorb their specific abilities.
  • Player Agency: Lead level designer Anne-Marie Grönroos confirmed that fighting every Resonant is not mandatory, emphasizing the game’s more open-world design philosophy.
  • Strategic Depth: Because the world is larger and less linear than the original Control, players must decide which encounters are worth the risk to expand their power set.

There’s this tendency of people not taking risks, and games start to resemble each other quite a lot, says art director Elmeri Raitanen regarding their departure from traditional gaming tropes.

With its emphasis on exploration and non-linear progression, Control Resonant aims to challenge the conventions of the ARPG genre. By avoiding the typical “corridor-shooter” feel and embracing the uncanny, Remedy is setting the stage for a sequel that aims to feel as unpredictable as the New York it depicts.
