Embark Studios has hit the pause button on Arc Raiders Expeditions until 2027, leaving the future of the game's prestige system uncertain as developers consider a total overhaul—or a complete removal.
The controversial Arc Raiders Expeditions system is facing a major crossroads that could lead to its complete removal from the game. Embark Studios recently announced a long-term pause on these progression resets, with Executive Producer Aleksander Grøndal confirming that the team is currently weighing whether to overhaul the mechanic or scrap the system entirely.
For those uninitiated, Expeditions serve as the prestige mechanic within Arc Raiders. Much like a reset in a competitive shooter, this system allows players to sacrifice their hard-earned progress, inventory, and skills in exchange for unique, long-term benefits. In the game’s lore, this represents your character successfully departing the Rust Belt. However, in practice, the reality has been far less satisfying for the community.
Feedback from the player base has been loud and clear: the current iteration of Arc Raiders Expeditions is plagued by accessibility issues, tight departure windows, and a reward structure that many find unfulfilling. Embark Studios acknowledged these pain points in August, noting that the game requires more than just minor patches to fix the core experience.
As Grøndal explained to PCGamesN, the studio is not just looking for an incremental fix. The team is currently in a period of deep reflection regarding the next steps. Whether they choose to reinvent the mechanic or delete it from the code, one thing is certain: the current system as players know it is being phased out.
The fifth Expedition, concluding in late September, will be the last one we see for quite some time. Embark has signaled that no decisions will be finalized until the release of the Frozen Trails update in October. While the prospect of losing a progression system might sound drastic, it highlights a proactive approach by Embark to ensure the game’s loop feels rewarding rather than punitive.
The goal is to provide a progression experience that feels earned and impactful, rather than a forced reset that leaves players feeling like their time was wasted.
Until the development team concludes their internal review, fans should expect a focus on other aspects of the game. For now, the fate of the caravan remains in limbo, but the commitment to addressing deep-seated player frustrations suggests that when the next iteration arrives—in whatever form it takes—it will likely be a radical departure from the status quo.
