James Gunn Defends Frank Grillo’s DCU Casting Against Age Plot Hole Complaints

When it comes to building a cinematic universe, casting choices are bound to invite scrutiny, and the Frank Grillo DCU casting is no exception. Fans recently raised concerns about whether Grillo is an appropriate age to play Rick Flag Sr., the father of Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag Jr. James Gunn, the architect of the new DCU, has stepped in to clarify the logic behind this creative decision.

The Truth Behind the Frank Grillo DCU Casting

Gunn addressed the so-called plot hole during the debut episode of his podcast, The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon?. Some viewers argued that Grillo, at his current age, appears too young to credibly father the character played by Kinnaman. Gunn dismissed these claims with a straightforward explanation regarding the character’s longevity.

Whether or not we consider The Suicide Squad canon, we know Rick Flag Jr. died because it’s been a very important part of other stuff going forward, including his father, played by Frank Grillo, who some people think is too young to be Joel Kinnaman’s dad but isn’t really because he’s very, very old.

Why Rick Flag Sr. is Integral to the Future

Frank Grillo’s iteration of the character is shaping up to be a pillar of the new DC universe. His transition from animation to live-action has been seamless, cementing him as a major player in Gunn’s unfolding narrative. Key appearances and plot points include:

• Creature Commandos: Grillo debuted as the voice of Rick Flag Sr., the field commander recruited by Amanda Waller to lead the team.
• Peacemaker Season 2: In his live-action debut, Flag Sr. takes the helm as the new director of A.R.G.U.S., driven by a singular mission: vengeance against Peacemaker for his son’s death.
• The Superman Connection: Flag Sr. already appeared in the 2025 Superman film and is confirmed to play an integral role in the upcoming sequel, Man of Tomorrow.

What to Expect Next in the DCU

Beyond his current commitments, Frank Grillo has hinted that his time in the DCU is far from over. In a recent interview, the actor suggested that Rick Flag Sr. will remain a presence in the franchise well after his appearance in Man of Tomorrow. By establishing Flag Sr. as a grizzled, long-lived operative rather than a standard mentor figure, Gunn has successfully bypassed the superficial age debate and set the stage for a compelling, vengeful antagonist that will haunt the DCU for years to come.
