How to Find the Mandate Encampment Outer Gate Key

If you have been scouring the Village of Lu in Phantom Blade Zero, you have likely encountered the locked Mandate Encampment gate. Many players find themselves hitting this progression wall early on, but the Mandate Encampment Outer Gate Key is actually hidden much further into the game than you might expect.

Where to Locate the Mandate Encampment Outer Gate Key

Despite appearing early in the game, the key to the Mandate Encampment is located in the Pangzhen area, which serves as the game’s fourth region. You will encounter this area during your second chapter. Follow these steps to secure the item:

Progress through the Pangzhen region until you reach the west side of the town.
Engage and defeat the boss, Gu Wangyue, the Chinese opera singer.
Once the battle concludes, head to the center of the arena and drop down the well.
Climb the ladder directly in front of you.
You will enter a room filled with puppet enemies; the key is located on a corpse within this room.

Why You Need This Key

The Mandate Encampment Outer Gate Key is essential for players looking to complete their map and access restricted content within the Wulin. Because the room containing the key is located on the main path through the Pangzhen region, it is difficult to miss entirely, but it is easy to overlook during the heat of combat with the nearby puppet enemies.

Pro-tip: Always clear the room of puppets before interacting with the corpse to avoid an ambush while you are picking up the item.

Practical Impact on Your Playthrough

Unlocking the gate is a mandatory step for completionists and those following the main questline. Once you have the key in your inventory, simply return to the Village of Lu to unseal the gate. This allows you to explore the Mandate Encampment fully, opening up new combat encounters, potential rewards, and further narrative developments that are otherwise blocked off. Make sure to check your inventory after defeating Gu Wangyue to ensure the key is secured before backtracking.
