Stolen RTX 5090 Graphics Cards Surface on Black Market After High-Stakes Airport Heist

A massive shipment of RTX 5090 graphics cards has vanished in a coordinated airport heist, with one unit already appearing on the black market for an exorbitant price.

The hardware enthusiast community is reeling after a bold airport heist resulted in the theft of two pallets of highly sought-after stolen RTX 5090 graphics cards. While the majority of the shipment remains missing, investigators have tracked at least one unit to a popular second-hand marketplace, signaling the beginning of what could be a long investigation into one of the most significant tech thefts of the year.

The Anatomy of the Heist

According to reports from Brazilian authorities, the theft was not a random act of opportunity but a coordinated inside job. The incident occurred on September 21 at a Brazilian airport, where the shipment—valued at approximately $495,000 at cost—was intercepted. Details from the investigation reveal the following participants:

  • Two outsourced forklift operators reportedly removed the pallets from the secure warehouse.
  • A third employee allegedly assisted in bypassing electronic security protocols to facilitate the removal.
  • The cargo, belonging to the electronics distributor Oderço, vanished before it could reach its destination.

Tracing the Stolen Hardware

The situation took a turn when a unit from the stolen batch appeared on the online marketplace OLX. Brazilian news channel Jornal da Band identified the card, noting that its serial number matched the missing inventory. The seller listed the GPU for approximately $6,400, a staggering markup that reflects the current scarcity of high-end hardware. While authorities have confirmed they are in contact with the importer, the vast majority of the missing cards remain AWOL.

The Oderço Group CEO, Oderço Matos, has been vocal about the incident, calling for transparency and immediate action from the authorities to recover the massive shipment.

What This Means for Gamers

For the average consumer, this heist serves as a stark reminder of the illicit black market that thrives when premium components like the RTX 5090 are in high demand and limited supply. While Nvidia maintains that production continues, the loss of such a significant volume of units at the distribution level only exacerbates availability issues.

Guarulhos International Airport has confirmed it is cooperating with law enforcement and assisting with the compensation process for the importer. As the investigation continues, buyers should remain vigilant when shopping for high-end components on secondary markets, especially when the pricing or origin of the hardware appears suspicious.
