Capcom reveals the provocative design philosophy behind Sasaki Ganryu in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, blending deadly swordsmanship with an 'alluring' edge.
When we think of legendary sword masters in Japanese folklore, we often conjure images of stoic, weather-beaten ronin. However, in Capcom’s highly anticipated Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the studio is choosing to break the mold. During an exclusive visit to their Osaka headquarters, I sat down with Art Director Hiroyuki Nara to pull back the curtain on the game’s primary antagonist, Sasaki Ganryu. While he is historically grounded in the Edo period, Capcom’s rendition of Sasaki is a masterclass in character contrast, blending cold-blooded ambition with an unsettling, undeniable magnetism.
The core tension of Way of the Sword lies in the friction between the protagonist, Miyamoto Musashi, and his rival, Sasaki. According to Nara, the team consciously avoided legacy interpretations of the character to focus on a binary opposition. While Musashi represents a rugged, utilitarian approach to life and combat, Sasaki is painted as a narcissist who treats his existence as a performance art. This is reflected in every stitch of his attire and the fluid, almost hypnotic way he traverses the battlefield. Nara notes that Sasaki possesses an edge of eroticism; he is intentionally designed to be alluring in his movement, creating a sense of unease that separates him from the standard, brutish videogame villain.
This ‘flashy’ nature is not merely for show—it is a weapon. By positioning Sasaki as a character who is deeply conscious of how he is perceived, Capcom has created a rival that commands attention every time he enters a room. He is the ultimate foil to Musashi’s grit, a peacock among wolves whose cockiness is backed by a terrifying, effortless competence. As players engage with Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the challenge will not just be surviving his blade, but resisting the trap of his calculated, elegant persona. It is a bold aesthetic choice that promises to make Sasaki one of the most memorable adversaries in modern action gaming.
