D&D 5e is a fine game, don’t get me wrong. I’ve spent countless hours adventuring, rolling dice, and delving into dungeons, and I’m currently enjoying a D&D 2024 ruleset campaign. I’m an avid Critical Role watcher; it’s fun!
However, D&D is ultimately a system that shines at dungeon-crawling and turn-based combat, and not much else. Its main appeal is being just crunchy enough for stat-heads and just rules-lite enough for casual players. But this comfortable middle ground often means it’s not the BEST at anything outside its niche.
The TTRPG world is a vibrant, diverse ecosystem brimming with incredible systems, each tailored to deliver specific experiences with unparalleled excellence. Why settle for pizza every night when there’s a world-class culinary scene waiting?
Consider these alternative universes:
- For satisfying tactical combat and deep character building: Pathfinder 2e
- For truly cinematic mech combat: LANCER
- For collaborative storytelling and character drama: Powered by the Apocalypse (PBtA) systems like Masks
- For visceral, terrifying horror: Mothership
- And, for the absolute best way to experience the intrigues, horrors, and moral dilemmas of being a vampire: Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition! It’s right there!
