Anthropic has implemented new constraints in Claude Code to stop users from reverse-engineering and cloning existing video games, aiming to protect intellectual property.
Anthropic has officially updated its Claude Code tool, specifically the Opus 5.5 model, to restrict the ability of users to clone or recreate existing video games. This move follows a period of intense industry scrutiny, as Steam has been increasingly flooded with low-effort, AI-generated titles that mimic or outright steal the work of independent developers.
The update, which was identified by eagle-eyed users on X and later confirmed by Anthropic technical staff, inserts a specific directive into the tool’s system rules. Under the identifier ‘tengu_heron_brook’, the new guidelines are explicit about what AI-assisted development should and should not entail:
Addy Osmani, a member of Anthropic’s technical staff, clarified that these changes were necessary because using the model to infringe on intellectual property directly violates the company’s usage policy. While original projects remain fully supported, the tool will now actively refuse requests that look like unauthorized remakes.
The gaming industry has been reeling from a surge of ‘AI slop’—low-quality, derivative projects generated using LLMs that often lack creative substance. The practical consequences for developers have been severe, leading to several notable shifts in how indie studios operate:
We’ll continue to iterate to ensure that we’re striking the right balance. In the meantime, if Claude turns down something that’s yours, send it my way. — Addy Osmani, Anthropic
While the crackdown on Claude Code is a win for intellectual property rights, it highlights the ongoing tension between powerful generative AI tools and the need for creative protection. For developers, this update provides a much-needed layer of defense against mass-marketed clones. As Anthropic continues to refine its models, the goal is to keep the door open for legitimate innovation while shutting out the shortcuts that undermine the hard work of human creators.
