Amanita Design has taken a firm stand against Nura Studios after they used generative AI to create a tribute for the cult classic game, Machinarium.
When it comes to the intersection of art and technology, the gaming industry is currently walking a razor-thin line. Recently, the tensions surrounding AI tribute content hit a boiling point when Nura Studios, an AI-focused storytelling company, attempted to honor the 2009 cult classic Machinarium with a generated video. Amanita Design, the developer behind the title, was quick to publicly condemn the act, labeling the AI-generated results as nothing short of disgusting.
The controversy began when the CEO of Nura Studios posted an AI-generated animation intended as a homage to the unique, hand-drawn aesthetic of Machinarium. Given Amanita Design’s reputation for having one of the most distinct visual styles in the industry, the community reaction was immediate. Amanita Design did not mince words, taking to social media to call out the fundamental disconnect between their craft and the nature of the AI output.
This incident is part of a broader, ongoing discussion regarding how generative tools are used to co-opt the hard work of indie developers. Amanita Design’s refusal to simply ignore the situation signals a shift in how game studios are protecting their intellectual property and artistic identity. By publicly rejecting the apology from Nura Studios’ CEO, Sylvio Drouin, the team behind Machinarium has highlighted several critical concerns for the creative industry:
Love letters are supposed to be handwritten. This looks disgusting and has nothing to do with us or our craft.
While Nura Studios has since deleted the content and issued an apology, the damage to their reputation and the frustration felt by Amanita Design remains palpable. With the announcement of Machinarium 2 earlier this month, the focus remains on the genuine creative output of the Czech-based studio. As the industry moves forward, this incident serves as a stark reminder that while technology evolves, the demand for human-led, authentic artistry in gaming remains stronger than ever.
