Who says old dogs can’t learn new tricks? Or rather, who says ancient CRPGs can’t get fresh content? Get ready, adventurers, because a beloved Dungeons & Dragons classic just received a patch that’s got us dusting off our digital dice bags.
We’re talking about Troika Games’ The Temple of Elemental Evil, a 2003 gem that faithfully translated the intricate third edition D&D ruleset into a sprawling computer role-playing game. It was a remarkably true adaptation, capturing the essence of tabletop adventure, even if the titular temple was perhaps a bit too sprawling.
Last year, SNEG bravely revived this legendary title, bringing its challenging tactical combat and deep D&D mechanics to a new generation (and rekindling old flames) on Steam. Modern players, ourselves included, often have a certain expectation these days: achievements.
SNEG heard the call! A recent update finally delivers those sweet, sweet motivational trophies, giving us yet another reason to delve back into the chaotic lands surrounding Hommlet and Nulb. It’s always satisfying to see those pop-ups, isn’t it?
But the biggest news for seasoned adventurers and power-gamers alike is the long-awaited fix for an infamous experience point bug. For years, ToEE capped XP gain once you hit level 10, a significant oversight given D&D 3rd edition’s unique crafting rules.
That’s right, crafting magic items and scribing scrolls in 3e required you to spend XP. Cutting off that income at max level made high-tier crafter-casters feel a bit pointless. Thankfully, that particular dungeon door is now wide open for endless progression.
Beyond the monumental XP fix, this patch also brings other welcome quality-of-life improvements. Expect Melf’s Acid Arrow to deal its damage as intended, and lifting curses via scrolls or spells should now work with far greater reliability.
For those diving back into The Temple of Elemental Evil, good news: most achievements you’ve already earned will unlock automatically upon loading your save. However, a few location-specific ones might require a nostalgic detour.
Time to revisit Emridy Meadows, the treacherous Moathouse dungeons, and other iconic locales to snag every last trophy. Honestly, just thinking about them gives us a delightful shiver of old-school CRPG glee.
Amplo Insights: This patch isn’t just a simple update; it’s a testament to the enduring appeal of classic D&D CRPGs and SNEG’s dedication to preserving and improving them. Fixing such a fundamental D&D 3e mechanic after two decades is a monumental win for players and a brilliant reason to reinstall Temple of Elemental Evil. It reminds us that truly great games never really die; they just wait for the right moment to get their next level-up.
