World of Warcraft: Forever Aims to Keep Your Gear Relevant Longer

Blizzard is shifting its philosophy for World of Warcraft: Forever, focusing on a sustainable gear progression system that avoids the rapid obsolescence seen in modern WoW expansions.

If you are tired of your hard-earned loot becoming digital dust every time a new expansion drops, World of Warcraft: Forever might just be the remedy you have been looking for. Blizzard has confirmed that their design philosophy for this new Classic+ experience is centered on long-term gear relevance, intentionally steering away from the massive power spikes that define the modern version of the MMO.

Why Gear Matters in World of Warcraft: Forever

In the current state of modern World of Warcraft, gear often feels temporary. With every expansion, stat squishes and drastic item level increases ensure that the gear you spent months farming is replaced within the first few levels of new content. For World of Warcraft: Forever, the development team is taking a different path. By keeping the level cap at 60 and implementing more subtle power jumps, the team wants to ensure that a best-in-slot piece remains valuable for a long duration.

The Philosophy of Gradual Progression

Vice president and senior game director Ion Hazzikostas noted that the team is looking back at the slower cadence of Classic raids. In older designs, gear from one raid tier often coexists with the next, rather than immediately superseding it. The goal is to build a system where:

  • Upgrades are incremental rather than exponential.
  • Rare, niche-specific gear pieces are worth hunting for, even if they aren’t ‘stat stick’ upgrades.
  • Players are not forced into a repetitive cycle of total resets.

Associate production director Clay Stone emphasized that they want to avoid invalidating old content. This means that if you spend time clearing a raid, the items you obtain have a much higher chance of remaining part of your core kit for many months, if not longer.

Is the Hunt for Loot Ending?

While the focus is on longevity, the developers acknowledge that the gear chase does not last for eternity. Eventually, players will acquire what they need, and that is considered a natural conclusion to a specific tier. However, to keep the game engaging, the team is introducing specialized gear:

It’s very much our intention to try wherever we can to not invalidate old content.

Expect gear that offers unique utility—such as items that grant specific advantages in desert environments or against dragonkin. By focusing on situational utility rather than just raw numbers, Blizzard hopes to keep players engaged with diverse content, ensuring that no piece of gear ever feels truly obsolete.
