Facepunch Studios is pivoting strategy for their Garry's Mod successor, s&box, following a rocky launch plagued by poor user engagement and low-quality content.
Garry Newman, the mastermind behind s&box, is officially hitting the reset button on the platform’s development direction. After a launch in April that saw a wave of negative reviews and plummeting player counts, Facepunch Studios is pivoting away from its original vision to prioritize the actual player experience over the engine’s backend capabilities.
Newman candidly admitted that the initial strategy for s&box simply didn’t hold up in the real world. By attempting to present users with a massive library of titles—essentially a ‘Netflix for games’—the platform inadvertently overwhelmed players with low-quality content, or what Newman bluntly referred to as a ton of shit games.
This massive influx of AI-generated slop and low-effort experiences made discovery nearly impossible. Recognizing this, the team is now moving away from the open-floodgate approach toward a more curated ecosystem.
The most significant shift involves a move toward a greenlight-style system. By requiring creators to apply for the Play Fund, Facepunch is actively discouraging the influx of clickers, idler games, and UI-based projects that have diluted the platform’s library. Key changes include:
My idea of a Netflix for games doesn’t work. It’s not feasible. It’s not how people discover games. You can’t land people on a menu of 60 games and say, ‘have fun’.
By shifting focus from building an engine for developers to creating a fun environment for players, Facepunch Studios hopes to salvage the reputation of its Garry’s Mod successor. While the road ahead is long, these sweeping changes represent a necessary maturation for a platform that clearly underestimated the importance of user experience in an oversaturated market.
