Well, fellow adventurers, it seems we’ve rolled a critical miss on a highly anticipated Dungeons & Dragons video game. Hasbro has officially cancelled a D&D title that was in early development at Giant Skull, the new studio helmed by none other than Stig Asmussen. Yes, the mastermind behind Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and a key figure in the God of War series.
This news hits like a goblin ambush, especially since the partnership between D&D stewards Wizards of the Coast (WotC) and Giant Skull was announced with much fanfare just last summer. The publishing agreement, however, was quietly terminated earlier this year, as reported by industry oracle Jason Schreier.
Wizards of the Coast stated they decided not to “pursue an early concept” from Giant Skull, but stressed they are still open to future pitches. Asmussen, ever the professional, has indicated that there are no hard feelings and things are “good” at his studio. A class act, even when plans unravel.
Remember when WotC president John Hight hailed Giant Skull as “the perfect fit” for the project? Asmussen himself teased a game rich with “immersive storytelling, heroic combat and exhilarating traversal.” Sounds like it was shaping up to be an action-adventure gaming experience right in his wheelhouse. We can only imagine the epic quests we might have missed.
This cancellation raises eyebrows about the ongoing strategy for Dungeons & Dragons in the gaming space, especially in the wake of Baldur’s Gate 3’s monumental success. It highlights the often-volatile nature of game development, where even promising concepts can be cut short.
But fear not, adventurers, for not all D&D portals are closing.
* Another D&D game, Warlock, is still on the horizon. This third-person action-adventure from Invoke Studios, known for Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance, is slated for a 2027 release.
* WotC is clearly trying to capitalize on the BG3 frenzy beyond video games. There’s a Baldur’s Gate HBO show and even an Astarion prequel novel in the works.
* In the gaming arena, WotC’s current marketing spotlight seems to be on Exodus, a Mass Effect-like RPG that promises grand adventures.
However, The Nerd Bureau can’t help but wonder if WotC has some secret plans for another D&D CRPG up their sleeve. Surely, they’ll want to replicate at least a fraction of Baldur’s Gate 3’s magic, even if Larian Studios has returned to their own Divinity universe. The market is hungry for more deep, narrative-driven RPG experiences within the D&D universe.
The Nerd Bureau Take: This cancellation is undoubtedly a setback for fans eager to see Asmussen’s distinct touch on the D&D universe. It underscores the challenges of early game development and the constant strategic pivots within major publishers like Hasbro. While disappointing, it’s a reminder that game development is a marathon, not a sprint, and sometimes even the most promising projects don’t make it past the starting line. We’ll be watching closely to see what Giant Skull and WotC cook up next, and sincerely hope a new D&D CRPG is indeed on a secret roadmap.
