New data from developer Cyanide reveals that 70 to 80% of Blood Bowl 3 matches are played against the CPU, prompting major changes for the upcoming Warhammer Blood Bowl release.
If you have ever argued in a gaming forum that your preferred way to play is the only way that matters, it is time to face the facts. Recent insights from the developers of Blood Bowl 3 have settled the debate once and for all: the community overwhelmingly prefers playing against the AI. According to Cyanide programmer Mathieu Valero, between 70% and 80% of all matches in the game’s Eternal Leagues are conducted in Blood Bowl 3 solo play sessions, proving that single-player experiences are far from a niche interest.
For years, multiplayer enthusiasts have argued that solo play was an afterthought in the franchise, largely due to rudimentary AI tactics. However, these statistics suggest that the community has been utilizing the game primarily for solo engagement all along. This reality check has forced the developers to pivot their priorities for the upcoming Warhammer Blood Bowl, which acts as an evolution of the current title.
Valero candidly admitted that the AI in the current iteration of the game was lacking, stating, "We didn’t have an AI—now we do." With the upcoming transition to Warhammer Blood Bowl, the team is focusing on making the CPU a more capable and reliable opponent. Instead of relying on complex human-like combos that the AI struggled to execute, the new system is designed to play to its strengths:
Beyond the AI, the developers are addressing the technical debt of the current title. Valero did not shy away from the game’s rocky launch, noting, "It was a mess, like there’s no two ways about it." To fix this, they are overhauling the user interface to ensure the game feels as good as it looks.
"The UI has been significantly revamped, first and foremost the homepage, which was a gigantic waste of space, now it’s going to be a customizable set of tiles."
Players can look forward to a more streamlined experience, including the ability to pin competitions directly to the homepage. This ensures that diving back into a season takes seconds rather than navigating through cumbersome submenus.
The transition to Warhammer Blood Bowl, to be published by Slitherine, is intended to be a fresh start for the series. Crucially, existing owners of Blood Bowl 3 will receive this massive update for free, with a release window currently planned for the end of the year. By acknowledging that the majority of their players prefer solo leagues, the developers are positioning the future of the franchise to be more accessible and robust than ever before.
