Ubuntu is developing an integrated AI-powered dictation tool called Myna, and you can now test its early components on your system.
Ubuntu is taking a significant step toward local AI integration with the development of Myna, a new speech-to-text engine designed for the desktop. While the feature has not yet reached an official stable release, early adopters can now experiment with the infrastructure Canonical is building to bring seamless Ubuntu AI dictation to your daily workflow.
Before you dive in, it is important to note that this is experimental software. The Myna ecosystem consists of several modular components currently available through the Snap Store and a dedicated PPA. To begin your testing, you will need to install the core orchestrator and the relevant AI speech models that translate your voice into text.
These components allow your local machine to handle transcription tasks, keeping your data on-device rather than relying on cloud-based processing.
A key part of the user experience is visual feedback. Ubuntu 26.10 includes a preinstalled component within the gnome-shell-ubuntu-extensions package that bridges the gap between the AI engine and the user interface. This extension triggers an on-screen HUD (Heads-Up Display) whenever the Ubuntu AI dictation service is active.
The HUD provides immediate visual confirmation that the system is listening, ensuring you know exactly when your voice is being captured and processed.
By moving toward local, integrated speech-to-text capabilities, Canonical is aiming to provide a more private and responsive experience for Linux users. Because these tools run locally, they eliminate the latency and privacy concerns typically associated with third-party web-based dictation services. While there has not been a formal call for public testing yet, the availability of these packages signals that a more polished, user-friendly implementation is on the horizon for future Ubuntu releases.
