Why Eternals Is Becoming the New Incredible Hulk of the MCU

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently facing a familiar narrative crisis: the isolation of the Eternals MCU project. Just as 2008’s The Incredible Hulk spent years as the franchise’s black sheep, Chloé Zhao’s 2021 epic now finds itself abandoned by the studio, with no clear path forward for its characters or storylines.

The Shadow of The Incredible Hulk

For over a decade, The Incredible Hulk existed on an island. Outside of Bruce Banner himself, the film’s supporting cast and villains were largely ignored, leaving fans frustrated by the lack of continuity. It wasn’t until 2016’s Captain America: Civil War that Marvel began reintegrating characters like Thaddeus Ross, eventually leading to a slow-burn revival of the film’s legacy in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Captain America: Brave New World.

However, this long-delayed acknowledgment came with a cost: expectations had built up so high over the years that the eventual payoffs for characters like The Leader or Betty Ross felt somewhat disjointed from the original source material. Marvel learned that ignoring a film doesn’t make it disappear—it just creates a narrative debt.

Why the Eternals MCU Silence Matters

It has been five years since the release of Eternals, and the silence from Marvel Studios is deafening. While a massive Celestial protrusion appears in Captain America: Brave New World, the actual characters—and the cosmic stakes they established—have been entirely absent from the broader MCU landscape.

• Lack of Narrative Thread Continuity: The unresolved cliffhanger regarding the abduction of the Eternals has yet to be addressed in subsequent films or series.
• Wasted Character Potential: Characters like Sersi, Ikaris, and Dane Whitman (Black Knight) were introduced as essential cosmic players but have since vanished.
• The Cost of Abandonment: By refusing to acknowledge the film, Marvel weakens the interconnected nature that originally made the MCU successful.

Marvel has forgotten that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. By sidelining characters, the studio risks losing the cohesive world-building that defines the franchise.

The Risk of Repeating History

The primary issue with the current handling of the Eternals MCU arc is that it forces the studio into a corner. By failing to integrate these characters now, Marvel makes it increasingly difficult to weave them back into the tapestry later without the audience feeling confused or disconnected.
