Blizzard Addresses Fan Backlash Over Overwatch 2 Mythic Skin Favoritism

Blizzard has officially addressed player frustration regarding the repetitive nature of Overwatch 2 Mythic skin releases, promising a more equitable distribution for underrepresented heroes.

If you have been playing Overwatch 2 lately, you have likely noticed a growing trend that has the community up in arms: the perceived favoritism regarding high-tier cosmetic releases. Players are increasingly frustrated as staple heroes like Kiriko and Genji continue to receive premium content, while many other members of the roster are left waiting years for their first top-tier appearance. Fortunately, Blizzard is finally listening.

The Growing Frustration with Overwatch 2 Mythic Skin Distribution

The controversy centers on the Overwatch 2 Mythic skin ecosystem. These items are the most expensive and elaborate cosmetics in the game, often costing the equivalent of $70 or 80 Mythic Prisms. Because only two Mythic skins are released per season, every slot is precious to the community. When Blizzard recently debuted a second Mythic for Widowmaker in the same season that Genji received his second, the backlash was immediate and severe.

Why Players Are Calling Out Favoritism

The core of the issue is the lack of variety for the game’s 40+ hero roster. Fans who main less-popular characters feel alienated by the current release cadence. The primary complaints include:

  • Repeated Mythics: Heroes already possessing a Mythic skin are receiving second versions before others get their first.
  • Perceived Bias: Popular characters are prioritized based on ease of conceptualization rather than equitable rotation.
  • High Cost/Low Variety: With a significant price tag attached to these items, players expect a broader representation of the diverse hero pool.

Blizzard’s Strategy Shift for Future Seasons

In a recent interview, art director Dion Rogers acknowledged the feedback, noting that while the team usually prioritizes designs they are most excited about, they clearly missed the mark on community expectations. Rogers confirmed that addressing this imbalance is now the number one priority for the development team.

The team has seen the feedback about repeat Mythics and is going to work on spreading them out better in the future.

Moving forward, the studio intends to shift its conceptualization process. While the team previously focused on the most immediate creative sparks, they are now pivoting to ensure a more balanced distribution. For the player base, this means we can expect a future where the Mythic spotlight is finally shared among heroes who have been sidelined for too long.
