A fan-developed multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 has been officially cancelled after receiving a cease-and-desist letter from Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Hopes for a fan-made The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer mod have officially been dashed. Mod developer Speclizer confirmed that a cease-and-desist letter from Sony Interactive Entertainment has effectively killed the project just weeks before its expected September release. Despite reaching significant development milestones, the project will no longer see the light of day.
The project had garnered significant attention within the gaming community, especially after transitioning from a simple 1v1 test to a feature-rich experience. Speclizer had dedicated months of work to replicate a authentic multiplayer feel, moving the mod far beyond its initial buggy stages.
Before the shutdown, the mod featured a variety of polished systems, including:
While the developer expressed deep disappointment, they have encouraged fans to follow their future original projects, noting that they intend to bring something bigger and better to the table next.
For many, this news is a frustrating reminder of the void left by the official cancellation of The Last of Us Online. Sony previously axed the standalone multiplayer title in 2023 to allow Naughty Dog to focus on its single-player pipeline, a decision that left fans yearning for a multiplayer experience within the world of Ellie and Abby.
This is not the first time Sony has stepped in to stop community projects. By protecting their intellectual property through legal action, Sony continues to maintain a firm grip on the TLOU franchise. Because the mod utilized assets and mechanics proprietary to Naughty Dog, the cease-and-desist was a predictable, albeit painful, outcome for those following the project’s development.
It is truly a shame to see another multiplayer effort for this universe get cut down, especially after Naughty Dog previously revealed that their internal project was nearly 80% complete before its own cancellation.
The community is left to wonder what might have been, as this marks the second time a The Last of Us multiplayer experience has been sidelined right as it neared completion. As it stands, fans will have to look toward future Naughty Dog titles for their multiplayer fix, as community-driven efforts continue to face strict enforcement from the publisher.
