The upcoming vampire RPG Nighthawks has been classified as Adults Only by Valve, causing it to disappear from Steam searches and face regional bans despite claims of mild content.
The upcoming vampire RPG Nighthawks is facing a major hurdle just weeks before its scheduled release. Valve has classified the title as Adults Only, a move that has effectively scrubbed the game from Steam search results and resulted in outright delisting across several countries, including Germany. Publisher Wadjet Eye Games and developer Richard Cobbett are currently challenging the classification, arguing that the game’s depiction of mature themes is far milder than Valve’s restrictive label suggests.
For independent developers, being slapped with an Adults Only rating on Steam is a massive blow to visibility and sales potential. When a game receives this classification, it is hidden from the platform’s standard storefront, creating significant barriers to entry for potential players.
Dave Gilbert, head of Wadjet Eye Games, expressed frustration on social media, noting that Valve seems to have misjudged the nature of the content entirely. He remarked that Valve appears to be treating Nighthawks like a explicit pornographic game, a claim that contradicts the developer’s stance on the RPG’s thematic focus.
Creator Richard Cobbett expressed shock at the decision, stating that the game focuses on the thematic exploration of vampire lore rather than gratuitous content. The sudden label of ‘Adults Only’ functions as a scarlet letter that severely undermines the game’s marketing efforts and reach.
It’s very bad news for us, because it immediately makes the game persona non grata in several important countries like Germany. We’re not sure exactly what triggered the issue, but we’ve obviously contacted Valve and we’re hoping that they will quickly remove the scarlet letter.
While the team continues to communicate with Valve to resolve the misunderstanding, the incident highlights the ongoing tension between independent developers and the opaque content moderation policies currently enforced on Steam. For now, fans of the title are left waiting for a resolution that could potentially restore the game’s visibility before its launch window closes.
