I Turned Off Friction in GTA 5, and Now Los Santos is a Physics-Defying Wonderland

A GTA 5 modder decided to turn off car friction and crank up vehicle momentum, transforming Los Santos into an airborne, physics-defying carnival of absolute chaos.

Modding Grand Theft Auto 5 has become a digital anthropology project of sorts, a daily ritual aimed at either preemptively building a PC version of GTA 6 or tearing Rockstar’s masterpiece completely apart at the seams. While the community eagerly awaits any crumb of news regarding the next major installment, creative players are finding infinite ways to wring novelty out of a decade-old sandbox. Instead of installing yet another high-resolution texture pack or hyper-realistic lighting overhaul this week, one intrepid modder decided to embark on a far more chaotic experiment: stripping away car friction entirely and granting every NPC vehicle an unstoppable, constant momentum.

The Airborne Carnival of Los Santos

Using the venerable Enhanced Native Trainer—a tool that continually unlocks hidden depths within the game’s code—vehicles in Los Santos have been officially loosed from their earthly obligations. Stepping out onto the balcony of Franklin’s hillside home no longer offers a tranquil view of a simulated Los Angeles; instead, it reveals an unforeseeable carnival of movement. Citizens’ cars now waft lazily through the air, gyrating across the city skyline like luminous lightning bugs caught in a digital updraft. Of course, this newfound aerial freedom comes with its own unique hazards. Attempting to casually stroll across a suburban street might result in instantaneous vaporization courtesy of an out-of-control transit van gliding past at a fraction of the speed of light.

Naturally, absolute chaos required a bit of fine-tuning. An initial experiment setting every vehicle’s speed to the maximum of 100 proved to be an uproarious disaster that rendered the game functionally unplayable, turning every intersection into an apocalyptic particle accelerator. Dialing the mysterious speed setting down to a modest 15 struck the sweet spot between total bedlam and playable navigation. The result is a wonderfully surreal playground where physics take a permanent holiday and Los Santos transforms into the most delightfully airborne city on Earth. As we inch closer and closer to the horizon of the next generation of open-world gaming, it is safe to say that breaking San Andreas in creative ways will never stop being endlessly entertaining.
