Pixar stole the show at D23 with massive updates for Incredibles 3, a vengeful return in Coco 2, and the announcement of a brand new movie, Ghost Market.
Pixar has always been a masterclass in emotional storytelling and technological wizardry, but their recent showcase at the D23 Expo proved that the animation powerhouse is ready to double down on some of its most beloved universes. For tech-savvy cinephiles and die-hard animation fans alike, the announcements were nothing short of a cinematic earthquake, spanning decades-in-the-making sequels and an entirely fresh intellectual property that promises to push the boundaries of digital artistry.
Heading the charge is Incredibles 3, slated for a 2028 release, which is taking the beloved superhero family into fascinating new territory. Moving past the nostalgic retro-futurism of the first two films, this installment tackles a more mature and satirical narrative: the corporatization of heroism. The Parr children are now stepping up to prove their mettle in a world dominated by the bureaucratic “Super Hero League.” Pitting them against a cynical antagonist who believes that caped crusaders are nothing more than a marketing illusion adds a delightfully meta layer to a franchise already celebrated for its sharp writing. Backed by returning fan-favorites like Frozone and the incomparable Edna Mode, the concept art hints at a visual evolution that will undoubtedly test the limits of modern rendering engines.
Meanwhile, Pixar is revisiting the vibrant, spirit-filled world of 2017’s masterpiece with Coco 2, arriving in November 2029. Shifting the spotlight to a teenage Miguel alongside his trusty spirit guide Dante, the sequel introduces a deliciously petty and high-stakes conflict. Benjamin Bratt returns as the disgraced musical icon Ernesto de la Cruz, seeking vengeance from beyond the grave and forcing Miguel into an uneasy alliance. It is a brilliant narrative flip that promises to blend the stunning, particle-heavy aesthetics of the Land of the Dead with fresh existential drama.
To round things out, Pixar also unveiled an entirely original concept titled Ghost Market. While details remain shrouded in mystery, the studio’s track record suggests we are in for another groundbreaking visual feast. Whether you are analyzing the polygon counts of the newest superhero suits or marveling at the afterlife’s rendering complexity, Pixar’s future is looking remarkably bright.
